Munch and his modern eye – Hotel de Saint-Germain, Paris
While we often evoke about his inner torments, Edvard Munch also owes his inspiration to his curiosity for his period. The 140 works on display in Paris until 9 January capture his interest in current affairs and remind us of how it influenced the Norwegian artist’s work.
The canvases, photographs and films from Norwegian museums and international collections show the artist’s interest in the most contemporary artistic media.
Interested throughout his life in the changing world, this avid newspaper reader notably tried his hand at photography, from which he declared he learned a great deal and produced an original series of self portraits.
These experiments carried out with talent confirm that far from being introspective, the artist had a thoroughly modern approach throughout his life.
