Whilst wars and the Inquisition tore through Europe, tolerant and prosperous Holland became home to a formidable artistic movement with writers and philosophers practising freedom of expression.
Following in the footsteps of Rembrandt, Gerrit Don and Gerrit van Honthorst, painters got involved in this major creative reaction. During its golden age, Holland underwent a cultural, ecnomic and political revolution with tradesmen coming to power.
The new bourgeoisie slowly began investing in the very aristocratic world of art and encouraged it to blossom. Most of the paintings on display reflect this boom: daily scenes, landscapes and still life depict an aesthetic yet educational fresco of Dutch society in all its forms.
