Located in the 5th district of Paris, the Rue Mouffetard is one of the oldest streets of the city. From the Gallo-Roman times, it was the « Italian road » leading to Rome. Throughout history, it was very crowded. With the development of the Latin Quarter and the Sorbonne, students began to occupy the place and moved into the small pensions.

Very lively both day and night, it is pleasant to stroll in the Rue Mouffetard. Many restaurants, boutiques and small shops follow one after the other. It never ceased to cultivate a lifestyle that attracted some popular writers including Hemingway.

Until October 10th 2011, an exquisite exhibition of little known illuminations is displayed by the Louvre Museum. You will discover true masterpieces originating from manuscripts dating from the 11th to 16th Centuries.

Over several centuries, manuscripts were illustrated with decorative patterns, figurative scenes and dropped capital letters brought to life with bold colours. Delicately painted by the illuminators on the parchments or treated animal skins in preparation for the writing, these images were occasionally embellished with gold or silver.

Becoming highly collectable from the 17th Century, they began to be appreciated for their artistic value. As a result many works were pulled apart and these illuminations were turned into small pictures. The Louvre Museum has built up a little known collection by gathering these magnificent pages over the years.

You will discover a beautiful selection from this collection until October 10, 2011. Seventy Italian, French, Dutch and German illuminations originating from historical, literary or liturgical manuscripts dating from the 11th to 16th Centuries are presented as true masterpieces.

In 1885 store in Paris which sold new products with the name Les Deux Magots given way to a coffee liqueur, which will keep the same name.

The place that now houses the gardens and the Luxembourg Palace in Paris was at the beginning a Roman camp. When the Chartreux have settled there in 1257, this site was a seedy place of green to the point we considered it as the evil. The Chartreux turned it into a flourishing monastery.

Marie de Medici bought the Duke of Luxembourg’s hotel in 1612 and in 1615 she built her palace made ​​by Salomon de Brosse in a Renaissance style reminding her of his native country. Despite the exil, the Palace stay the property of the royal family until the Revolution. The gardens were enlarged encroaching on the Chartreux’s lands, and now offer a splendid setting for walkers. The Luxembourg Palace is today the seat of the Senate.
